Tihar, the festival of lights, colors, and joy, is one of Nepal’s most beloved celebrations. Falling after Dashain, it spans five days and is marked by reverence for nature, animals, and the goddess of wealth, Lakshmi.
One of the most endearing aspects of Tihar is the celebration of animals, symbolizing our interconnectedness with the natural world. Kukur Tihar, the second day of the festival, is dedicated entirely to dogs, honoring their loyalty, companionship, and protective nature. While the exact origins of Tihar are shrouded in myth and legend, it is believed to have deep roots in Hindu mythology. The festival is associated with the worship of Yama, the god of death, and his sister, Yamuna. It is said that Yama visits Earth during Tihar, and honoring animals and lighting lamps are ways to appease him and bring prosperity. The custom of celebrating animals during Tihar is thought to have evolved from the recognition of their importance in human life. Cows, oxen, and dogs, in particular, have been invaluable companions to humans for centuries, aiding in agriculture, transportation, and protection.
Since 2015 the commencement of our shelter , Sneha’s Care has been celebrating Kukur Tihar with unparalleled joy and enthusiasm. For nearly a decade, the echo of their joyful barks has been the soundtrack to our Kukur Tihar celebrations. Each year, we come together to honor over 150+ incredible dogs who call Sneha’s Care their own home. We adorn them with beautiful garlands, apply auspicious tikas, and prepare a feast of their favorite treats. It’s a day filled with their bright and happy eyes, wagging tails, happy barks, and the heartwarming bond between humans and dogs. On the particular day, the shelter transforms into a canine paradise with fragrant marigold garlands, enticing treats, and colorful rangolis adorning the grounds. Dog lovers from near and far converge to shower them with affection, applying auspicious tikas, offering prayers, and sharing mouthwatering treats. This outpouring of love extends beyond our shelter’s walls. Adopted dogs from Sneha’s Care, now cherished family members in Germany, the USA, the UK, and countless other corners of the world, also celebrate Kukur Tihar with heartfelt enthusiasm. Their shared photos, brimming with joy and creativity with whatever resources they have warms our hearts and spirits. The global celebration of Kukur Tihar transcends borders to show us the enduring bond between humans and dogs. It fills our hearts with immense gratitude and happiness. It would be our absolute pleasure to have you join us for our upcoming Kukur Tihar on 2024 . Your presence for the celebration and for volunteering during this occassion would be greatly appreciated. See you there! We can’t wait to celebrate Kukur Tihar with you all this year !!!!!
